Hi, I’m Thomas and I’m excited to finally unveil the best solution for sold-out campgrounds. Most campgrounds release availability for the entire summer all at once in the spring, usually at 7:00 am. It’s a horrible system for many reasons.
How are we supposed to know all the dates we want to go camping 6 months in advance? What about campers who can’t afford to pay for an entire summer’s worth of campground fees all at once? What about spontaneous camping trips when other plans fall through, or there’s unexpected good weather?
When I got my wife interested in camping in 2020, I found it hard to find open campsites. I figured they would become available quite often as people had to cancel for various reasons. But it seemed like my only option to find those last-minute availabilities was to keep refreshing reservation sites hoping to see it before someone else. I’m a huge nerd with experience creating websites, so I figured there must be a way to automate that task.
I wrote a script that would check certain campgrounds and email me when a site became available. Over the summers of 2020 and 2021, I tested and improved my script. It worked great and was able to check 3 different reservation systems. At the beginning of 2022, I decided to create a way for anyone to use my code to find campsites for themselves, and camperalerts.com was born.
The basic idea is you create an alert for a specific campground and date range, and we’ll let you know if we find an available campsite that matches your alert criteria. If you choose the Plus alert type, you can also narrow your search to a specific campsite. With the Pro alert, you can narrow your search to up to 5 specific campsites, search for two date ranges, and choose to get notified via email or text.
